One of the key significant elements of organizational success is leadership; thereby, understanding these elements of how to become a successful leader and what mostly the leadership is about is essential. It has been found that as a general topic, leadership has been discussed widely; however, at the same time, it has been quite elusive and puzzling. Moreover, the literature on leadership has been riddled with a huge barrage of ideas, models, concepts, and theories. Several types of research have been conducted to intact this deeply; where some of them left unverified. Reflecting both complex and simple, it is widely based on different theories of leadership, which sometimes make it quite difficult to understand the vague terminologies and the underlying concepts.
However, at times, numerous perspectives have been presented by the literature with respect to different behavioural and styles of leadership. According to which, it has evaluated that different styles of leadership have been successful in distinct situations and organizations. It was indicated by that due to the huge amount of various theories, there is no proper description of leadership in literature. It is apparent by the fact that around 3500 leadership definitions, including both comprehensive and simple, were provided by Bass throughout his time of forty years as a researcher. The capability of the leadership can be described to encourage the employees towards shared objectives. At the other end, there is a completely submissive description. They referred leadership to the procedure of accomplishment of common objectives while offering assistance to the shared efforts.
In addition to this, numerous theorists provided different kinds of leadership approaches towards different styles of leadership; since they can be linked back to the appearance of different beliefs of religion. These theories were a transactional theory, transformational theory, behavioural approach, situational theory, trait theory, contingency theory and a great man theory. Whereas, four dimensions of leadership are dialectical, situational, collective and dynamic. It was also proposed that the entire literature on leadership can sum up through 5 significant hypotheses. These hypotheses are; leaders are self-made, the possibility of longevity is only possible through adaptability, collaboration must be encouraged by leaders, there is no effective and defined method of leading, and good character is a charm of every good leader. Along with this, he also suggested that further study is indeed required four main aspects that are, leader performance metrics, followership, training of leader, and selection of a leader.
